Travel Gear
“There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.”
Norwegian Folk Saying
Norwegian: Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær
When planning to travel for 13 months, certain travel gear issues become crucial:
- Do I really need this item?
- How much space or weight will this item add to my load?
- Will this item be able to survive constant usage?
While not being extreme travel-gear minimalists who could survive out of a standard school-sized backpack, neither are we “steamer trunk being carried by porters” type of packers. We considered multiple scenarios for packing including condensing our whole family’s supplies into two communal big suitcases or large backpacking backpacks and each person having one standard suitcase which must be checked when flying. We have eliminated both options based on our travel goals and preferences.
Instead, our family members will each have a 22 inch (carry-on sized) rolling suitcase and a school-type backpack suited to the size of the individual by whom it will be carried. In this way, we can travel on most airlines without needing to check suitcases and incur baggage fees. Our packing plan also means that suitcase real estate is at a premium — each item must earn their way into a trip around the world!
We have carefully researched and planned every piece of travel gear we will be using — suitcases, backpacks, technology, rain gear, shoes, and every piece of clothing down to our undergarments! If we are bring it, the item has made it through rigorous consideration.
As we head off into OurWorldEdventure, we’ll be letting you know which items have lived up to their promise and what we love about them. Similarly, if a piece of gear fails to perform, we’ll let you know!
What are some of your favorite pieces of travel gear? Is there any travel gear you detest?
