First off, eating out in Copenhagen is expensive by US standards. But, frankly, everything in Copenhagen seems expensive by US Standards! Don’t let that stop you from considering Copenhagen for a family itinerary.
While a tad expensive, Restaurant PUK, a Danish foods restaurant in Copenhagen did not fail to impress us with its flavor and variety.
While Danes tend to end a meal with a cheese course we got permission from the good humored waiter to go with the cheese course first. He even promised not to look down on us for doing so.
So we had a warm breaded Camembert cheese on toast with micro greens, and a blueberry compote.
I ordered the Danish hamburger from the waiter and he warned me that it is not like a American burger. He explained the Danes eat nothing healthy! This hamburger was epic. It was served almost raw, smothered in deep fried onions and sautéed onions. He explained that I had to pour the gravy over the whole burger and dig in! I nicknamed the hamburger, “the widow maker.”
It was also served with great french fries and a Danish remoulade sauce for dipping. It was so good we didn’t even miss American ketchup.
Nicole had a very traditional Danish Tartar which is a high-quality raw ground beef seasoned with salt, finely grated hard cheese, then topped with capers and microgreens. It was accompanied by four traditional sides: pickled beets, French fries, remoulade, and a medley of pickled veggies in a mustard sauce.
Although the American food quality critics in Nicole & Paula were skeptic, the dish was absolutely delicious and did not trigger food-born digestive problems.
Dessert was equally memorable, as we ordered the red porridge and double cream. It was essentially a compote of three red berries served with a very thick cream that was poured over the top.
We also had vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge sauce which deserves mention as it was way better than any American hot fudge sundae we have had.
At the end of the waiter brought us two complementary lemon desserts: a layer of fluffy lemon moose lemon topped with whipped cream and crumbles of white chocolate and dried herbs.
The last ingredient sounds weird, but trust me, you could sit down and finish a bowl of these for breakfast and love it. Nicole described them as “fluffy clouds of creamy citrus straight from heaven!”
