One of the questions we get asked most frequently is, “But what are you doing for your girls’ education while you travel?”
My (Nicole) knee-jerk, snarky reaction (which thankfully I usually keep to myself) is, “Well, we are traveling with our daughters around the world, duh!!”
My more socially appropriate responses depend on to whom I am speaking and have several variations. Please see the page on “Worldschooling” for more of a philosophical discussion of this topic. In short we believe:
Nicole has spent considerable time on the practical details of our Worldschooling plan and the individual details for each of our three daughters. Additionally, Ryan and Nicole are passionate about being life-long learners. So first, an overly broad sweep of what our whole family will be learning:
World Literature:
All of us will be reading great books, including living books, usually on a Kindle or a device that has a Kindle app. We are also fond of audio books including books on Audible. Nicole is researching age-appropriate literature to develop book lists for each person that help to expand learning connected to our itinerary.
World History:
The Audiobook series of The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child by Susan Wise Bauer, read by Jim Weiss.
Locally guided tours
World Cultures:
Cultural arts around the world with a special focus on handmade crafts, music and dance
Field- or Market-to-Table Cooking classes around the world
Spanish Immersion Language School in Costa Rica
World Religions:
Christianity: Study Tours : Footsteps of Jesus (Israel & Palestine) & Footsteps of St. Paul (Turkey & Greece)
Islam: Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Morocco, Southeast Asia
Hinduism: India, Southeast Asia
Buddhism: Southeast Asia, Asia
Geography: Mapping the World by Heart
And our basic education plan per child:
Hope: 2nd grade
Jot-it-Down Writing from BraveWriter.com
ST Math Homeschool online or App based
Special focus: animal adventures around the world
Joy: 6th grade
Faltering Ownership Writing from BraveWriter.com
Singapore Math 6A & B Text-based
Special focus: engineering; cultural costumes and fashion design around the world
Harmony: 9th grade
Harmony will be registered for 4 core courses using an online curriculum either with Laurel Springs or PLATO. This will allow the easiest documentation of units toward graduation and progress toward college preparation classes on her transcript for OCSA, the charter High School to which she plans to return.
1. Integrated Maths 2 or Geometry
2. World History
3. World Literature
4. Either World Cultures or Art History
In addition, Harmony will use BraveWriter High School Composition and continue her growth in French.
Further, each daughter will be blog contributors!
We have absolutely no doubt that our daughters will be receiving an education that is literally world-class education. Further, it will likely far surpass what they would receive within traditional classroom confines for one year when considering both content and the life-long impact!
